FMHL 630 - Addictions & Recovery Oriented Principles and Practices 3 This course introduces students to a conceptual framework for understanding substance use disorders and addictions. It examines the history of alcohol and drug problems in the United States, various etiological theories and models of addiction, the role of culture in substance use and abuse, high-risk groups, the physiology and pharmacology of different types of substances, and the effects of substance abuse on individuals, families, and communities. This course will highlight how addressing the complex problem of addictions requires a multi-faceted approach and collaboration between social service agencies, public health, clinical medicine, recovery oriented systems of care, and public safety agencies at every level. Prevention initiatives such as educational workshops, overdose prevention, public awareness, harm reduction, access to recovery oriented treatment systems, medically-assisted treatment and public policy will be discussed.
