MPPA 600 - Foundations of Community Development

3
This graduate course explores the foundations of community development. It considers the notion of community through the historical and theoretical perspectives and contemporary approaches used, and skills needed by community workers. It begins by examining the meaning and purpose of community and the ways communities change over time. It identifies major influences and the contributions of Canadians to the development and practice of community development. It considers the role of relationship-building and maintenance and presents a model to identify issues that arise in community development work. It explores development in Indigenous and international communities, and the future of community development and social welfare in Canada. The readings teach students how to be successful in working with various communities through the application of select case studies to illustrate principles of community practice.
