CMHC 615 - Crisis Intervention and Trauma Counseling 3 This course will introduce students to crisis intervention models and associated responses to clients’ mental health needs during crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events. Strategies and procedures for assessing risk, including suicide, aggression, and self-harm will also be covered. This course takes a systems approach to explain human functioning, health, and dysfunctional behavior when interacting with the larger social systems. An emphasis is given to the role of the counselor in advocating and promoting client welfare, including an understanding of the impact of a range of pervasive social justice issues on clients’ mental health, including the cumulative effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The principles of grief and bereavement processes, including cultural differences will also be addressed.
