COUN 536 - Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling

This course introduces a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to provide ethical and effective counseling services in a multicultural society. Students will explore lived experiences of oppression, power and privilege, for example, racism, discrimination, sexism, and ageism. The course will cover theories, research, and practices associated with multicultural humility and social justice advocacy, along with a discussion of intersectionality, the dynamic nature of identity (including, but not limited to, gender, affectional orientation, age, ability, culture, ethnicity, medical, social constructs, spiritual beliefs and practices, religion, occupational, education, environmental, and socioeconomic status).
