DCES 890 - Advanced Addictions Counseling

This course focuses on students’ in-depth understanding of theoretical models and research related to addictions counseling, including addictive behaviors, chemical dependency, alcoholism, etiology of addiction, and medical and psychiatric complications in the form of dual diagnosis or comorbidity. Students will also examine evidence-based and systems treatment models, approaches, strategies, and techniques. Some of the areas addressed, for example, are the effects of addiction and substance abuse on families, interventions, treatment approaches and counseling techniques, the recovery process and the efficacy of twelve-step programs and community-based programs. In addition, students will be looking at the development and management of addictions counseling programs, along with models of change and the supervision and training of addiction counselors. Ethical and multicultural issues in addictions counseling and in supervision and training of addictions counselors will also be addressed.
