This course is designed to provide an operational knowledge base and skills needed for providing more effective forensic mental health and public safety services in a multicultural society. The course will cover theories, research, and practices associated with multicultural competence with an emphasis on between-group and within-group differences and the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, country of origin, disability, and socioeconomic status. Students will be introduced to topics including inequity, oppression, privilege, power, racism, sexism, power, ableism, ageism, prejudice and discrimination. The course will help students cultivate self-awareness of their own cultural identity, and awaken a greater understanding of others, which will promote ethical behaviors and values that support the provision of compassionate forensic mental health, public safety and other human services.
