FMHL 604 - Crisis, Critical Incidents, and Trauma Informed Programming and Intervention

3
In this course, students will explore the dynamics of crisis and crisis intervention, including the human stress response (the flight, fight or freeze mechanism), the nature of “shock” and the signs of distress and crisis. Students will be able to recognize how the impact a crisis can have on their own wellbeing is essential to mitigating its impact on themselves, as well as those entrusted to their care. The course will equip students with the tools they need to assess grief associated with loss and change, focusing on the elements that determine the effects of grief: the intensity of emotions, the personal values and the long-term effects connected to loss, and the resiliency needed to adapt to change. Students will also learn the principles of mental health first aid, critical incident stress management and how to apply them in the aftermath of a traumatic event or critical incident. Emphasis will be placed on trauma informed policies, programs and practices throughout public safety organizations and other forensic mental health related agencies.
