COUN 750 - Psychopharmacology in Counseling

This course educates the non-prescribing counselor about the biological processes of psychotropic medication, with emphasis on how counselors and medication prescribers can work collaboratively in the best interest of the client. Students gain an understanding of the medical resources available to clients and how the medical model can be incorporated within the therapeutic alliance. Legal and ethical issues related to psychopharmacology will be covered, including case scenarios to assist in comprehension of appropriate medication management. Students will demonstrate knowledge of commonly prescribed Psychotropic medications including antipsychotic, antidepressant, anti-anxiety and sedative/hypnotic agents. Students will understand and have a basic knowledge of developing psychological evaluations, using the mental status exam and psychological history when creating treatment plans for clients.
